The Boys & Girls Club of Zapata County was founded in 1991 by a small group of concerned leaders, who began meeting regularly to discuss the feasibility of an organization like the Boys & Girls Club opening a branch in Zapata, Texas. In 1992, they formed an official volunteer board of directors and developed by-laws, filed articles of incorporation with the state of Texas and secured 4.5 acres of land from the county of Zapata as an official site for a future clubhouse.
In 1993, the organization received an IRS letter of determination, designating the club of Zapata as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. In August of that same year, the board was also awarded a $10,000 community initiative venture grant from the United Way of Laredo to purchase recreational equipment and supplies. In 1994, the club's board of directors actively sought and hired an executive director. That same year, Shell Western E&P, Inc. donated a used mobile home (12'X 62') to the organization as a temporary club house and office space. An official charter was awarded to the board of directors, by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in April 1995 recognizing the Boys & Girls Club of Zapata County, Inc. as a member in good standing with the national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Club began providing services to youth and families in the summer of 1995, utilizing the donated mobile home as a safe and secure environment for youth. Even though space was very limited, the staff members and volunteers used this space to its fullest potential. The club began with a limited membership of 100 youth between the ages of 6-12. Recreational programs and facility geared for youth only.
In May 1998, the hard work and dedication of the members of the board came to fruition in the forms of a 5,850 square foot building that was built next to the mobile home. This endeavor was made possible with the help of a $200,000 grant that was approved by the Lamar Bruni-Vergara Trust. With this grant, the club was able to provide services to a larger number of youth that also included teens. In 2001, another generous donation was allotted to the club by the United Way of Laredo on behalf of the International Bank of Commerce of Zapata to help pay off the building loan that the organization had acquired to finish the construction of the building. As of 2018 the Boys & Girls Club of Zapata County, Zapata unit has served over 2,000 youth.
In August 2004, an addition was made to the club. A unit was opened to service San Ygancio Texas area youth and teens. The Boys & Girls Club of America granted a $40,000 pass through grant to the club to make this unit possible. San Ygnacio is a town within the count of Zapata that is located 15 miles north of Zapata and has an estimated population of 800 inhabitants. The unit is situated within the A.L. Benavidez Elementary School in San Ygnacio. As of 2018, the unit has served over 200 youth. Boy and girls ages 6-18 are welcome to join. During the summer of 2017 club management was able to secure a building in San Ygnacio to use as out club site. Moving our San Ygnacio club from the school gym to its own building has opened up many opportunities to expand programs offered to the youth at this site.
